Poole's Desperate Visit

Poole's Desperate Visit A Terrified Butler Poole appears at Utterson's door, visibly shaken. He says there is something wrong with the doctor. He is afraid and cannot bear it any longer. Utterson agrees to go with him. The Walk to the Square It is a wild, cold, windy night. The streets are deserted, and Utterson feels a crushing anticipation of calamity. They arrive at the square, and Poole lets them in. The Servants Huddled The hall is bright, and all the servants are gathered around the fire, terrified. The housemaid is weeping. Poole takes Utterson to the back garden and the laboratory.

The Voice from Within

The Voice from Within Listening at the Door Poole leads Utterson to the cabinet door. He knocks and announces Utterson, but a voice from within says, 'Tell him I cannot see anyone.' The voice is changed, complaining. Poole's Conviction Poole insists that is not his master's voice. He believes Jekyll has been murdered and that someone else is in the cabinet. He has seen a masked figure that was too small to be Jekyll. The Decision to Break In Utterson, after hearing Poole's account of the strange orders for drugs and the figure seen, decides they must break down the door. He takes a poker, and Poole gets an axe.

The Door Is Broken The Siege Utterson demands entry, but the voice from inside is Hyde's. Poole swings the axe, and after five blows, the lock bursts. The door falls inward. The Scene Within The cabinet is quiet, with a fire burning and tea things laid out. The room seems ordinary until they see the body of a man on the floor, still twitching. It is Edward Hyde, dressed in Jekyll's oversized clothes, a crushed phial in his hand. The Aftermath Utterson declares that Hyde is gone to his account. They search the building for Jekyll's body but find no trace. The mystery is deepened, and Utterson must now read the two narratives to understand.
